Networking events can be overwhelming if you are not accustomed to mingling with large crowds. Even if you are a socialite, time spent with a group of professionals and business owners can be wasted if you are not careful…
Prior to attending make sure that you do some research. Will the attendees benefit you AND will you benefit others if you go? Who is hosting the event and who will be present in the room. You will be a standout if you hold meaningful, thoughtful conversations. First impressions really are lasting impressions!
Do you have enough business cards to pass out? Prepare a special spot in your briefcase or portfolio to store the cards that you receive. (Looks bad when you think that you are pulling out your card and you hand a stranger someone else’s card.) Practice your “elevator speech” so that you come across confident and so you do not stumble over your words.
BE ON TIME! How long will it take to get there? Does the venue have a parking lot? You will want to look fresh when you walk in the room, not stressed and frustrated.
